We are constantly bombarded with situations and circumstances that cause us to have and display an array of emotions.

From being happy, joyful and cheerful to being sad, moody and anxious, our body is constantly subjected to jolts of hormones from our body and brain.

Where your brain secretes dopamine, serotonin or oxytocin then you are more than likely to experience feelings of happiness.

On the other hand if your body releases cortisol especially when you are under tremendous strain your body switches to survival mode and you experience feelings of anxiety, fear and uncertainty.

If you constantly flood your thought process with negative thoughts then you are going to subject your body to a barrage of cortisol hormones that will ultimately physically weigh you down.

The Health Effects Of Negative Thoughts On Your Body

By having increased levels of cortisol in your body due to your constant negative thinking and your body switching to survival mode all the time you are likely to be exposed to the following health risks which vary from severe to mild.

  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Stroke
  • Persistent headaches
  • Migraines
  • Premature aging (appearance of wrinkles, dark spots, dark circles around your eyes)
  • Frequent breakouts (pimples and acne)
  • Anxiety attacks
  • Shortness of breathe
  • Frequent mood swings

To be able to avoid these health complications you will need to stop those negative thinking and be more positive in your thinking.

In so doing your brain will secrete more dopamine, serotonin or oxytocin and you will have a feel good feeling more often despite your current predicament or situation.

It is this connection between the mind and body that makes us react to similar situations differently.

While a person may react positively to a job loss for example, another person could be devastated and in extreme cases even suicidal.

Ultimately we are what we think and our physical reaction is a product of our thought process.

The key is to fill your mind with positive thoughts, for example a loss of job could make you say – ‘it’s not the end of the world’ or ‘I’ll get one better’, these are very strong statements and will positively influence your mood.

But if you think and say – ‘I’m finished!’ or ‘I’m ruined!’ after the unfortunate loss of a job, then you are already switching off to a defeatist attitude and this will have a negative impact on your overall health.

So stay positive today and keep believing that no matter the circumstances surrounding your life, you can only get better.
